Bengaluru: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because it progresses without noticeable symptoms. By the time it is detected, irreversible vision loss may have already occurred. Unlike other eye diseases, glaucoma primarily affects peripheral vision, making early detection crucial. The condition is caused by optic nerve damage (the nerve connecting the eye to the brain) due to increased eye pressure, leading to gradual and permanent vision loss. Currently, about 11 million people in India are affected by this condition.
Hence, raising awareness about glaucoma is vital, especially for individuals over 40 years of age and those with risk factors such as a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, eye trauma, chronic steroid use, high myopia, or hypermetropia (high minus or high plus).
“Glaucoma Awareness Week is observed globally every year during the second week of March, and this year, it falls between March 9th–15th.
The theme for this year is See the Future Clearly. Our efforts align with this theme, as glaucoma cannot be prevented or completely cured, but further vision loss can be avoided with timely intervention,” said Dr. Sathi Devi A V, HOD, Department of Glaucoma, Narayana Nethralaya, Rajajinagar. To highlight about this vision-threatening condition and our efforts toward its prevention, we conducted a press meet at the Press Club, Bangalore.
