ABB Group CEO Morten Wierod led the groundbreaking of a new integrated Motion facility in Peenya. He also inaugurated the Electrification and Automation Nelamangala Campus 2 on Kunigal Road.

ABB has a strong and longstanding presence in Karnataka, with Bengaluru serving as one of its most important manufacturing and technology hubs in India. With this latest investment, ABB will operate three manufacturing locations with multiple shopfloors in the state, employing more than 3,000 people across its manufacturing operations.

“This expansion reflects ABB’s long-term commitment to India and our local-for-local strategy. By strengthening our manufacturing and technology capabilities in Karnataka, we are bringing advanced ABB technologies closer to customers, enabling industries to improve energy efficiency, digitalize operations and support India’s infrastructure growth,” said Sanjeev Sharma, Country Head and Managing Director, ABB India.

ABB’s Motion business is expanding its Peenya campus with two new manufacturing facilities. Spanning 6,100 sq m., the site will accommodate up to 300 employees once fully operational. It will produce a broad range of energy efficient motors, including flameproof (Ex) designs, roller table variants, and large smoke ventilation models, along with low-voltage drives and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The campus will also host a service and training center enhanced with digital tools and remote diagnostics to support customers throughout the equipment lifecycle. ABB’s portfolio of high efficiency motors and drives installed over the past 12 years has delivered annual energy savings of approximately 20 TWh—equal to nearly half of Delhi’s yearly electricity consumption.

At ABB’s second Nelamangala campus, a 16,470 sq m. multi business manufacturing hub has been set up to expand production for the Electrification and Automation businesses. The facility will support a broader portfolio, including smart power technologies, system interface units, gas analyzer system integration, service labs, blending operations, excitation systems and high-power rectifiers. Manufacturing of power management solutions critical for data centers will scale up nearly tenfold at this campus, reinforcing ABB’s role as a key technology provider. ABB’s low and medium voltage systems already power more than 30% of India’s hyperscale data centers.

The campus will also advance ABB’s innovation led Make in India portfolio, including blending and excitation solutions for lube, paint, paper & pulp industries. The excitation supply factory will deliver systems not only within India but also for export to the wider region to support reliable power generation and resilient grids. The blending facility will include an assembly line for pigging line valves, automation staging cabinets and on-site factory acceptance tests (FAT) to enable efficient and reliable operations in the Indian paint industry. With this investment, the high-power rectifiers supplied to local chemical and metals customers will now also extend to regional markets.

ABB recently announced investment of USD 75 million in 2026 to expand manufacturing and R&D for critical segments and creating 300+ new skilled jobs in engineering, operations, and research. This investment, combined with its 2025 spend of over $35 million, reflects ABB’s commitment to scaling its “local-for-local” strategy in India.

Karnataka has long been a center for technology talent across software, manufacturing and R&D, and ABB’s continued investments strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem by expanding local manufacturing, developing specialized skills and supporting supplier networks across the region.

ABB is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. By connecting its engineering and digitalization expertise, ABB helps industries run at high performance, while becoming more efficient, productive and sustainable so they outperform. At ABB, we call this ‘Engineered to Outrun’. The company has over 140 years of history and around 110,000 employees worldwide. ABB’s shares are listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm (ABB). www.abb.com

Karnataka: Only State to Meet Quotas in Both Police and Judiciary, Retains top position among 18 States in the India Justice Report 2025 https://newxpressnews.com/karnataka-only-state-to-meet-quotas-in-both-police-and-judiciary-retains-top-position-among-18-states-in-the-india-justice-report-2025/ https://newxpressnews.com/karnataka-only-state-to-meet-quotas-in-both-police-and-judiciary-retains-top-position-among-18-states-in-the-india-justice-report-2025/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 13:09:25 +0000 https://newxpressnews.com/?p=2377 Bengaluru, April 15: The 2025 India Justice Report (IJR), India’s only ranking of states on delivery of justice in the country, released today, ranks Karnataka 1st overall among the 18 Large and Mid-sized states (with population of over one crore each), retaining its position from last the edition. The state ranked 1st in Legal Aid (rising from 2nd in 2022) and retained its 2nd spot in Prisons.

In the overall rankings, it was followed by Andhra Pradesh, climbing from fifth in 2022 to second, Telangana (2022 ranking: 3rd), and Kerala (2022 ranking: 6th). Sikkim (2022: 1st), topped among the seven Small States (with populations less than one crore each), followed by Himachal Pradesh (2022: 6th) and Arunachal Pradesh (2022: 2nd).

The India Justice Report (IJR) was first initiated by Tata Trusts, with the first ever ranking published in 2019. This is the fourth edition of the report, in collaboration with partners including the Centre for Social Justice, Common Cause, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, DAKSH, TISS–Prayas, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, and How India Lives, IJR’s data partner.

Through a rigorous 24-month quantitative research, the IJR 2025, similar to the previous three, has tracked the performance of states in capacitating their Justice delivery structures to effectively deliver mandated services. Based on the latest official statistics from authoritative government sources, it brings together otherwise siloed data on the four pillars of Justice delivery – Police, Judiciary, Prisons, and Legal Aid. Each pillar was analysed through the prism of budgets, human resources, workload, diversity, infrastructure, and trends (intention to improve over a five-year period), against the state’s own declared standards and benchmarks. This edition also separately assesses the capacity of the 25 State Human Rights Commissions (see SHRC brief for more) and consists of essays on mediation and access to justice for persons with disabilities.

Discussing the India Justice Report, Justice (Retd.) Madan B. Lokur commented, “The punishing process of accessing justice begins with the very first encounter an individual has with the system. With our failure to properly equip and train frontline justice providers—police stations, legal aid actors including paralegal volunteers and district courts—we fracture public trust. These institutions are intended to embody our commitment to equal justice. The strength of our entire justice framework rests on these critical first points of contact. The fourth edition of the India Justice Report points out that improvements remain few and far between in the absence of adequate attention given to resources. Alas, the burden continues to remain on the individual seeking justice, and not the state to provide it.”

Ms. Maja Daruwala, Chief Editor, India Justice Report, highlighted, “As India moves forward into a hundred years of being a democratic, rule of law nation, the promise of rule of law and equal rights will remain hollow unless underwritten by a reformed justice system. Reform is not optional. It is urgent. A well-resourced responsive justice system is a constitutional imperative that must be experienced as an everyday reality available to every citizen.”

Karnataka’s Ranks: Pillar Wise

Legal Aid: Karnataka Breaking the National Trend of Decline in Paralegal Volunteers

Karnataka ranked first in legal aid this year. While, nationwide, the number of paralegal volunteers has been reducing over the years, Karnataka increased its number of paralegal volunteers per lakh population from 4.9 in Jan 2019 to 7.59 in September 2024, making it the highest in the country. It also has the highest share of women in panel lawyers (44%). However, it reduced its number of legal service clinics in villages from 174 clinics in 2021-2022 to just 32 in 2023-24.

Police: Lowest Officer Level Vacancy
Karnataka increased its per capita spend on Police from Rs. 943 in 2020-21 to Rs. 1261 in 2022-2023.
Between 2022 and 2023, it also halved its constable level vacancy from 12% to 6%, and officer vacancy from 11% to 1%, making it the state with the lowest officer-level vacancy among all large states. Additionally, it is the only state which fulfills the SC, ST and OBC quotas at both the officer and constabulary level. 99% of all police stations in the state have women help desks. Further, it also has the highest utilisation of modernisation funds (98.5%) in the country.

Prisons: Highest Share of Women in Prison Staff Nationally
With 33% women in prison staff, the state’s prisons have the highest share nationally. It has also improved on video conferencing facilities in prisons from 68% in 2021 to 93% in 2022. However, the vacancy among medical officers (74%) and medical staff (64%) in prisons is quite high.

Judiciary: Fills all positions reserved for SC, ST and OBC judges in the district judiciary
The state reduced its vacancy among judges in the district courts from 22% in 2022 to 16% in 2025. There are now 37% women judges in the district courts of Karnataka. The High Court also reduced its staff vacancy from 26% to 17%.

The IJR 2025 has reiterated both immediate and foundational corrections. It has flagged urgent filling of vacancies and increased representation. To effect irreversible change, it has exhorted that Justice delivery be designated as an essential service.

Airtel releases spam report that analyses the trends observed on its network since the launch of its spam solution https://newxpressnews.com/airtel-releases-spam-report-that-analyses-the-trends-observed-on-its-network-since-the-launch-of-its-spam-solution/ https://newxpressnews.com/airtel-releases-spam-report-that-analyses-the-trends-observed-on-its-network-since-the-launch-of-its-spam-solution/#respond Tue, 10 Dec 2024 05:09:11 +0000 https://newxpressnews.com/?p=2162 Bangaluru, December 10: Bharti Airtel, India’s first spam-fighting network, has flagged a staggering 8 billion spam calls and 0.8 billion spam SMSes within two and a half months of launching its AI-powered, spam-fighting solution. Leveraging this advanced algorithm, the AI-powered network has successfully identified close to 1 million spammers every day.

The company, in the last 2.5 months, has alerted close to 252 million unique customers to these suspicious calls and has observed that there has been a 12% decline in the number of customers answering them. Six per cent of all calls on the Airtel network have been identified as spam calls, while 2% of all SMSes have also been identified as spam. Interestingly, it has been observed that a staggering 35% of the spammers have used landline telephones.

Additionally, customers in Delhi have received the maximum number of spam calls, followed by customers in Andhra Pradesh and Western Uttar Pradesh. Delhi is also where a maximum number of the spam calls have originated, followed by Mumbai and Karnataka. In terms of SMSes, the maximum number have originated in Gujarat followed by Kolkata and Uttar Pradesh and the maximum number of customers targeted have been from Mumbai, Chennai and Gujarat.

As per the trends, 76% of all spam calls have been targeted at male customers. Additionally, distinct differences have been noted in terms of spam call frequency across age demographics. Customers in the age bracket of 36-60 have received 48% of all spam calls, while those in the 26-35 age bracket have been the second-most targeted, accounting for 26% of spam calls. Approximately only 8% of the spam calls have landed in the handsets of senior citizens.

The company’s findings have also shed light on the hourly distribution of spam activity. Spam calls commence from 9 am onwards and gradually escalate in volume as the day progresses. The peak of spam activity is observed between noon and 3 pm, during which the highest concentration of spam calls occur. Moreover, there is a notable disparity in the frequency of spam calls between weekdays and weekends. The volume of these calls diminishes by around 40% on Sundays. Specifically, devices in the price range of 15,000 to 20,000 rupees are the recipients of approximately 22% of all spam calls.

By meticulously examining a multitude of parameters, the AI-driven system has been able to identify these unwanted intrusions in real-time with remarkable accuracy. This groundbreaking initiative has firmly established Airtel as the first service provider in India to offer a comprehensive solution to the growing menace of spam, setting new industry standards for inclusive security measures that prioritise the privacy and convenience of its vast customer base.

The Government of India (GoI) has allocated 10-digit numbers with the prefix 160 to for service and transactional calls. Customers can expect to receive calls from these 160-prefix series assigned to banks, mutual funds, insurance companies, stockbrokers, other financial institutions, corporates, enterprises, SMEs, big and small businesses used for making transactional and service calls.

Additionally, those customers who have not opted for Do-not-disturb (DND) and have subscribed to receiving promotional calls will continue to receive them from a 10-digit number with the prefix 140.

Lakhs of Small Shopkeepers in Karnataka Unite to Through Draconian Laws https://newxpressnews.com/lakhs-of-small-shopkeepers-in-karnataka-unite-to-through-draconian-laws/ https://newxpressnews.com/lakhs-of-small-shopkeepers-in-karnataka-unite-to-through-draconian-laws/#respond Tue, 08 Oct 2024 17:32:10 +0000 https://newxpressnews.com/?p=2032 Bengaluru October 8: More than 2,00,000 small shopkeepers under the aegis of the Karnataka State Retail Beedi-Cigarette Merchants Association, which represents the Karnataka Chapter of the Federation of Retailer Association of India (FRAI), have been protesting across the state against various Municipal bodies bid to introduce ‘License Raj’. This is despite earlier assurance given by the government and authorities that the proposal for License Raj will be dropped and harassment against small traders would not be allowed.

The aggrieved retailers have been holding demonstrations in Mysuru, Hubli, Mangalore Vijayapur among other cities, to voice their opposition against the proposed implementation of licensing regulation, despite earlier assurances against the same which will make it impossible for them to sustain their families. Shopkeepers in large numbers gathered in Bangalore today to carry out a demonstration against the draconian law.

The Karnataka State Retail Beedi-Cigarette Merchants Association strongly believes that the proposed regulation will be devastating for lakhs of small traders and their family members, who have already suffered humungous financial setbacks in the last couple of years and are barely managing to sustain livelihood in the given the the high inflationary condition. It is to reemphasize that too many tobacco laws will only increase the ope of harassments and corruption by enforcement officials. scope

The Association is a body of over 2 lakh micro, small and medium retailers from across Karnataka. It also represents the livelihood of over 10 lakh poorest of the poor retailers and their families and is known for raising coues concerning their lives and livelihoods

Explaining the concerns around the proposed draconian “License Raj” proposals, Mr. B. N. Murall Krishna, President Karnataka State Retail Beedi-Cigarette Merchants Association, said, “On occount of theent, Karnataka State Retail Beer Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution Act. 2003, COTPA, our members are already being subjected to daily harassment by enforcement officials, who take advantage of their illiteracy and lack of awareness to extract gratifications. As per the proposed laws, tobacco product sellers will have to get a license which will be renewed every year. In addition to that, multiple obligations on the part of the retailers such as the display of license and maintenance of a suggestion book, along with heavy penalties in case of non-compliance, are being proposed”

The Association believes that such measures will cause massive harassment to lakhs of poor and mostly uneducated micro retailers at the hands of enforcement officials. It will also lead to a sharp increase the cost of doing business at a time when retailers are reeling under the aftermaths of the Covid pandemic.

Mr. Murali Krishna added that based on the past experience with other laws, the very act of getting a license will be challenging for small sellers, who do not have the money to pay the fees and are not educated enough to complete the paperwork required for licensing. “More laws will also mean more opportunities for local officials to harass our members. Our Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka have taken several important measures to simplify processes for trading in Karnataka in the true spirit of ‘ease of doing business’ and ‘promotion.of entrepreneurship’. However, the Urban Development Ministry and Municipal Corporation’s proposal to make licences mandatory for trading in tobacco products through the proposed laws its draconian clauses is in complete contradiction with the Prime Minister and Chief Minister’s vision for the state.”

If one reads the proposed Municipal orders and circulars then it is very clear that the only objective behind this exercise is to cause hardships to small shopkeepers. The members of the Karnataka State Retail Beedi-Cigarette Merchants Association belong to the lowest economic strata of society. It will be impossible for them to afford extra spends for licenses and renewals.

The Association demands that the state government must provide alternate means of livelihood to its members before implementing such draconian License Raj rules, which will surely result in a loss of income for lakhs of traders. It has further claimed that its members sustain their livelihood by selling goods of daily needs like biscuits, soft drinks, mineral water, bidi, cigarettes, etc. The average earnings of a small and marginal trader is about Rs 6,000-12000 per month which is barely adequate to feed two square meals a day to an entire family. Such regressive laws being proposed will further derail their businesses and earnings.

The Association is shocked to see that the Government of Karnataka, instead of supporting small retailers, is trying to implement laws that will deal a deadly blow to them. It is of the view that the proposed licensing law for selling tobacco products is being brought/proposed because of pressure from anti-tobacco NGOs with vested interests. The development will only support shifting of tobacco retailing business to foreign small shopkeepers of Karnataka. hurting livelihoods of lakhs of companies/supermarkets/malls,

India already has one of the toughest anti-tobacco laws in the world, which includes 85% graphic health warnings one of the toughest anti-tobacco smoking ban, no sale within 100 yards around educational institutions, etc. The_Association strongly believes that the existing provisions under COTPA 2003 for tobacco controlssociation Ste than sufficient for regulating tobacco products. Therefore, there is absolutely no need to introduce any new regulation.

The Karnataka State Retail Beedi Cigarette Merchants Association humbly request the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka to stand by’lakhs of poor, small shopkeepers of the State and his commitment that the License Raj for selling tobacco products will be dropped forever and instead help our members sustain and recover in the given difficult high inflationary market conditions.
