Karnataka emerges as growth engine of aluminium extrusion industry

ALUMEX India 2025 to showcase the state’s leadership, resilience, and global opportunities

Bengaluru, August 18: With rapid industrial growth, strong export potential, and a thriving manufacturing base, Karnataka has emerged as a key growth engine of India’s aluminium extrusion industry. Its strategic location, skilled talent pool, and robust infrastructure have positioned the state as a preferred hub for both domestic supply and international markets.

Organised by the Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers Association of India (ALEMAI) and supported by Hindalco, Vedanta, JNARDDC, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Mines, and the Ministry of MSMEs, ALUMEX India 2025 will highlight Karnataka’s growing role and future in the aluminium extrusion sector. As the country’s first and only dedicated platform for the aluminium extrusion industry, the event will take place in New Delhi from September 10 to 13, bringing together over 200 exhibitors and 12,000 visitors from across the aluminium extrusion value chain.

Aluminium extrusion is a fast-growing sector in Karnataka. While Bengaluru-based Jindal Aluminium Ltd. (JAL) remains India’s largest aluminium extrusion company, Hindalco and Bhoruka Group also have manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru. Moreover, the state is home to several medium & small-sized aluminium extrusion manufacturing facilities catering to sectors like construction, electric mobility, aerospace, renewable energy, and consumer durables. The push from government-led initiatives like the Smart Cities Mission, affordable housing schemes, and clean energy programmes is fuelling sustained growth in the state’s output.

Jitendra Chopra, President, Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers Association of India (ALEMAI), said, “Karnataka is rapidly becoming a hub for aluminium extrusion with its unique advantages of manufacturing strength, technology, and export potential. The state plays a critical role in meeting India’s domestic demand as well as exports, and holds immense strategic value for the industry. Through ALUMEX India 2025, we aim to showcase these strengths and open doors to fresh collaboration and innovation.”

India’s aluminium extrusion market stood at $3.51 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $4.61 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.5%. While North India remains the dominant market, the southern region, led by Karnataka, is now recognised as a major growth corridor. However, the industry players remain concerned about global headwinds, including volatility in raw material prices, high energy costs, and the recently announced 50% tariff on aluminium products from India by the US administration, which could impact export competitiveness.

“The high tariffs by the US are a challenge, but a bigger challenge is the under-utilisation of domestic manufacturing capacity due to cheap imports. The total installed aluminium extrusion capacity in India is 3.5 million tonnes per annum, but the utilisation is only around 2 million tonnes, with the remaining 1.5 million tonnes imported. There is a need to put in place safeguards in Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Far East countries and other nations to revive domestic units,” Mr. Chopra said.

ALUMEX India 2025 will address challenges facing the aluminium extrusion sector through sessions on technology localisation, green extrusion practices, government support for MSMEs, and emerging global trends. It will facilitate innovation and the adoption of sustainable practices. Business matchmaking and buyer-seller meets will enable strategic partnerships and drive investment across the value chain.

Out of an estimated 400-450 aluminium extrusion plants in India, more than 225 are members of ALEMAI, representing a combined annual capacity of 2.1 million tonnes. With participation from global players and leading Indian firms, ALUMEX India 2025 aims to strengthen the aluminium extrusion ecosystem and position India as a global manufacturing leader.
